Ingredients:

4 medium green tomatoes, sliced into thick rounds

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tbsp vinegar)

1 cup cornmeal

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Vegetable oil for frying

 

Instructions:

1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat.

2. In one bowl, mix flour with salt and black pepper.

3. Pour the buttermilk into a second bowl.

4. In a third bowl, mix cornmeal and breadcrumbs.

5. Dredge each tomato slice in the flour mixture first, then dip it in the buttermilk, and finally coat it with the cornmeal and breadcrumb mixture.

6. Carefully place the coated tomato slices into the hot oil and fry for about 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

7. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

8. Serve hot, optionally with dipping sauce like ranch or spicy mayo.
